GENERAL INFORMATION
Designs protect the appearance of the whole or part of a product resulting of its characteristics, namely, lines, outlines, colors, form, texture or materials and of its ornamentation

Protection is conferred to new designs that have singular character, as well as those that, without being completely new, carry out new combinations of known elements or different arrangements from already used up elements, in such a way that the respective objects achieve a singular character.

The exam can only be requested in case of opposition.

Several designs can be included in a single registration (multiple requests).
 
Since Portugal is a member of the European Union the Community Design Regulation and respective complementary Regulations are in force

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

The minimum requirements for the presentation of an application for registration are:
1. The name or the company name of the applicant, nationality, residence or place in which it is established (head-office), the tax identification number when resident in Portugal and the email address, if available;
2. Indication of the products in which the model or design is meant to be applied or incorporated;
3. Name and country of residence of the creator;
4. Colors, if they will be claimed;

Graphic or photographic representations of the model or design must also be annexed to the application form.

FEES

Official fees are due for the filing of a design application. The same applies for renewals and other acts.

DURATION OF THE REGISTRATION

Designs are valid for a period of five years from the date of the filing of the application, and may be renewed, for equal periods, to the limit of 25 years.
